2.SH NAME
3hosts \- hostname to IP address database
4.SH SYNOPSIS
5.B /etc/hosts
6.SH DESCRIPTION
7The hosts database lists the IP addresses and the hostnames that translate
8to these IP addresses. It is used by
9.BR nonamed (8)
10in a network without name servers. A simple
11.B /etc/hosts
12may look like this:
13.PP
14.RS
15.ta +15n
16.nf
1710.0.0.1 flotsam
1810.0.0.2 jetsam
19.fi
20.RE
21.PP
22These two entries give names to two IP addresses. The file may contain
23comments marked with '#'.
24.PP
25You can have aliases (more hostnames on the same line) to give a machine
26more than one name, like
27.BR www ,
28if you run a web server on one.
29.PP
30If your PC is Internet connected then you can specify the name server(s)
31to get more information from with %nameserver entries:
32.PP
33.RS
34.ta +\w'172.16.24.3'u+4m +\w'%nameserver'u+4m
35.nf
36172.16.24.3 %nameserver # dns1.example.com
37172.16.24.6 %nameserver # dns2.example.com
