23.SH DESCRIPTION
24.PP
25When \fIfdisk\fR starts up, it reads in the partition table and displays
26it.
27It then presents a menu to allow the user to modify partitions, store the
28partition table on a file, or load it from a file. Partitions can be marked
29as
30\s-1MINIX 3\s-1,
31DOS or other, as well as active or not.
32Using \fIfdisk\fR is self-explanatory.
33However, be aware that
34repartitioning a disk will cause information on it to be lost.
35Rebooting the system \fIimmediately\fR
36is mandatory after changing partition sizes and parameters.
37\s-1MINIX 3\s-1,
38\&\s-2XENIX\s0, \s-2PC-IX\s0, and \s-2MS-DOS\s0 all have different
39partition numbering schemes.
40Thus when using multiple systems on the same disk, be careful.
41.PP
42Note that
43\s-1MINIX 3\s-1,
44unlike
45\&MS-DOS ,
46cannot access the last sector in a partition with an odd number of sectors.
47The reason that odd partition sizes do not cause a problem with
48\s-2MS-DOS\s0 is that \s-2MS-DOS\s0 allocates disk space in units of
49512-byte sectors, whereas
50\s-1MINIX 3\s-1
51uses 1K blocks.
52\fIFdisk\fR has a variety of other features that can be seen by typing \fIh\fR.
53.PP
54.I Fdisk
55normally knows the geometry of the device by asking the driver. You can use
56the \fB\-h\fP and \fB\-s\fP options to override the numbers found.
